We’re so incredibly lucky to have Centennial Parklands at the centre of Sydney’s eastern suburbs, and these sprawling parklands are certainly getting a lot of use now that the weather is warming up. We thought we’d ask around in our Bondi Junction real estate office and round up our five favourite ways to celebrate the amazing weather.
1. A laidback picnic
It’s fair to say 2020 has been the year for picnics, but it’s the perfect place to be when the sun is out – snacking on your favourite food, watching the clouds and sharing a space with the honeyeaters and lorikeets. There are 12 lush bookable picnic sites if you’d like a guaranteed spot, or you can just wander the vast parklands and find the place that feels right for you. Even better if you can find a spot close to the Ian Potter Children’s WILD PLAY Garden, so the littlies can let loose on the epic play equipment there.
2. Cambridge Markets EQ
There is no better way to spend a sunny Wednesday or Saturday morning. The Cambridge Markets EQ at Moore Park’s Entertainment Quarter offer a tempting cornucopia of goodies, ranging from organic veg and fresh flowers to indulgent pastries and homemade chocolates. Grab a great coffee and follow the aromas to try out all kinds of delicious fresh food. Handy tip: the Christmas markets here are also a fantastic option to get your festive shopping done in a low-key way.
3. Spotlight Prowl
Spring is the time to book in your after-dark experience in Centennial Parklands with Spotlight Prowl for Families. For a little over $20 each you can wander through the park with an experienced ranger and spot brushtail possums, tawny frogmouths and grey-headed flying foxes, as well as microbats AND megabats (did you even know there was such a thing?). The monthly groups are small and you can make private bookings too – it’s a genuinely fun experience at any age.
4. Horse riding
You might well have spotted the horses in Centennial Parklands before, but did you know that you can go for a ride yourself? The Equestrian Centre offers a range of options to suit, from pony rides for kids through to regular riding lessons and one-off experiences. How incredible is it to live centrally in Sydney and still be able to ride a horse on the weekend!
5. Bush School
If you have little ones and you live close to Centennial Parklands, then the Bush School program is a perfect way to let them engage with the natural world on a regular basis. There are 10-week courses suited for children aged 2.5 to 5 years as well as 5 to 12 years where kids can build cubbies, enjoy free play and take part in nature-based activities with a parent in attendance. By all reports, it’s great fun connecting with nature in this experiential program.
